For scuba divers seeking world-class marine biodiversity, diving Papua New Guinea's Bootless Bay offers an unmatched experience, just half an hour from the capital, Port Moresby.
This underwater haven is part of the Coral Triangle and boasts over 29 dive sites from colourful coral gardens and spectacular wall dives to iconic bommies like the legendary Suzie's Bommie - a coral pinnacle teeming with sweetlips, fusiliers and trevally covered in sea whips and gorgonian fans - some hosting pygmy sea horse communities.
The Bay is also renowned for its muck diving and critter hunting, offering near guaranteed encounters with the rare lacy scorpionfish (Rhinopias aphanes) along side ghost pipefish nudibranchs, cuttle fish and frogfish. Wrecks such as the MV Pai II and the Pacific Gas, which are now encrusted in green sun coral and vibrant soft corals and are bursting with marine life. Visibility is generally best between late September to early December.

From the wide angle, soft and hard coral covered fish-scapes of 'Suzie's Bommie' and 'Dinah's Delight' to the WWII A-20 Havoc bomber wreck, the Pacific Gas and the Pai II and the Loloata Island jetty for cuttlefish, schools of scad, razorfish, juvenile catfish and lion fish.
