Yes. Humpback whales are naturally gentle and aware of humans. Our partner resort guides are experts in whale behaviour and will instruct you on when to enter the water and how to maintain a respectful distance.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

You need to be comfortable in open water but you do not need to be an Olympic swimmer. You can wear a wetsuit/flotation device and a mask and snorkel. Swimming is done on the surface without diving down so as not to stress the whales.

What is the best month for whale swimming in Tonga?

August and September is peak season with high chances of mother, calf and escort action. July and October can be quieter around the resorts. July marks the arrival of the whales and October often has the most activity in terms of mating behaviour.

The arrival of the humpback whales in Vava'u is one of the ocean's greatest migrations - a journey of thousands of miles from Antartic feeding grounds to the warm, sheltered waters of Tonga. They come to breed, give birth and nurture their young, creating one of the world's most spectacular wildlife events. You will typically see two types of pods - competitive groups (heat runs) : a single female being pursued by multiple males in a display of speed and power to win the right to mate - and mother and calf pairs : mothers rest with their newborns in the shallows, often accompanies by an 'escort' ( a male) waiting for the female to be receptive again.

June (Early Arrivals) : The first whales begin to arrive in Vava'u's waters, marking the start of the season.
July to October (Peak Season) : This is the core of the season. The waters are filled with whales, offering the highest chances for sightings.
August to September (Optimal Swimming) : Calves are larger and more active and mothers are often calmer, making this the best period for in-water whale encounters.
Late October - November (Departure) : Whales start their long journey back to Antartica, and the season officially winds down.
